Great Dames Hosts 2014 Smart Talk Connected Women Series!

Prominent Women Share their Stories in Powerful Conversations

[break]

JLGreat Dames will host the popular SmartTalk Connected Women series of prominent women engaged in powerful conversations, beginning tonight at the DuPont Theatre. Tonight’s program features Joan Lunden, the award winning journalist, NY times best selling author, successful entrepreneur and well-known television personality. Joan Lunden will share her personal journey from morning television anchor to her current adventures.

SmartTalk has assembled an extraordinary group of women speakers this season, including actress Sigourney Weaver and media powerhouse, Tina Brown. Radio personality, Vi Higgensen and Iraq veteran, Melissa Stockwell, round out the five-event monthly series, between January and May 2014.

“We are thrilled to welcome such powerful and inspiring women to Delaware community in a forum that allows them to share their stories in a way that motivates us to learn and to pay it forward. That’s what this series is all about,” said Sharon Kelly Hake, CEO of Great Dames.

Tonight, Hake will also recognize the “SmartTalk Local Hero of the Month,” Priscilla Rakestraw, a well-known and admired community advocate and volunteer who has worked tirelessly on behalf of her constituents in the public, private and nonprofit sectors throughout her career. Rakestraw is currently Development Director for Ministry of Caring. Rakestraw will receive a Smart Talk Hero certificate and a contribution from the Great Dames Fund to the Ministry of Caring in her honor.

Dr. Maria Hess, the award winning editor-in-chief of Delaware Today magazine, will moderate tonight’s program.

SmartTalk has been bringing women together to experience the power of the spoken word since 1991. Over the past several years, SmartTalk has grown into one of the most compelling and entertaining live events in the nation. The core mission of SmartTalk stems from the understanding that women are inspired by the heart and voice of other remarkable women.

For more information, visit smarttalkwoman.com. To purchase tickets, visit duponttheatre.com or call the DuPont Theatre Box Office at 302-656-4401 or 800-338-0881.

Hake describes Great Dames as “a community of women who believe in their individual and collective power to create change.” “Our goal is to bring out the great dame in every woman by providing opportunities and professional services that enable them to become inspired leaders,” she says. The strategy includes personal leadership branding, mentoring, community service and advocacy. Hake founded the company in 2009 after 28 years as a marketing director at DuPont. She runs it with her daughter, Heather Cassey. Having earned plaudits from women around the world, they hope to create Great Dames chapters beyond Delaware. “Women need to find their voice,” Hake says. “Women have the brains, the talent and the experience. Now we need the audacity.”
