Change Your World

Change Your World

The great Margaret Mead once said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” At Great Dames, our community gets together in many ways to help change the world.  These service opportunities provide a powerful way to do good work, meet new people, be inspired and have fun.

World Academy for the Future of Women

The purpose of the World Academy for the Future of Women is to advance and accelerate women’s leadership worldwide. It is the mission of the Academy to empower women through the discovery of their passion, purpose and path to success, calling forth the full expression of human possibilities through collaborative and inclusive partnerships. Great Dames has hosted facilitator training and supported members of our community who have participated in this extraordinary experience.

Power of One3Power of One

Power of One calls for each one of us to do what we can, one at a time, to fill an important need in our community. The Great Dames community selects an important cause or initiative that we care about – one that’s in dire need of supplies or materials to operate – and we support it by joining forces at a Power of One Collection at a Great Dames Event.

Examples include:

  • Art supplies for kids in the Summer Art Camp at the Haiti Family Initiative
  • Scholarship Funds for women in the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation
  • Reading books for teen girls at Fatima House of Light in Sierra Leone
  • Art supplies for adjudicated teens in Young at Art program
  • School supplies for foster care youth at Kind to Kids

Great Closet Clean Out

This  annual career clothing drive is held each Spring during National Volunteer Week and benefits The Clothing Bank of Delaware, Wilmington Senior Center “City Styles Thrift Shop”, Great Stuff (DE Breast Cancer Coalition), and others. Hundreds of women donate new or gently-used, clean business and dress attire for women in any size, shape or color. GREAT opportunity to do a little spring cleaning! Here is a Thank You Letter from Bill Perkins, Executive Director, Friendship House.

Great Winter Coat Collection

Each winter our community collaborates with Volunteer Delaware to host a Great Winter Coat Collection on MLK Week. We donate gently used, warm winter coats, hats, scarves to folks who need them. This collection benefits the Friendship House (DE Clothing Bank), Wilmington Senior Center “City Styles Thrift Shop”, and other deserving clothing banks.
